Traditional Archery Returns

Hunting with rifles and shotguns has a long tradition in North America. From these modern weapons hunting, some individuals decided to resurrect blackpowder muzzle load hunting. For those not familiar, those are the types of rifles that you’ll see on a movie about George Washington. While blackpowder hunting was far from easy, it gained a popular following and has seen its resurgence last decades.

Now, archery hunting is also a popular form of hunting; and for years, the types of bows used in archery hunting were ‘new’ manufacturer models that had come off the assembly line. Nothing wrong with that, as many of those types of bows were excellent hunting devices and they remain very popular. And alongside the popularity of these types of bows there is a archery movement very similar to the muzzle loading gun movement. That archery movement is the lost art of traditional archery. Traditional archery refers to the use of longbows and  wooden arrows, many of which are handcrafted. These bows and arrows put a unique spin on the age old sport of archery hunting and they are not exclusive to hunting. Traditional archery has grown to include archery competitions for sport and hobby as well as the study of traditional archery, a subject that has become popular with history affcionados.

If one has an interest in learning how to use a traditional bow and arrow, they might want to head over to the local hunting shop and see if any classes are offered. Even if hunting is not your thing, as a method of target shooting, traditional archery has much to offer. The tradition continues…
